Let’s talk about one of those topics nobody wants to bring up but everyone wonders about — shaving during pregnancy.
After working as a labor and delivery nurse for over twenty years (and having three kids of my own), I promise there’s nothing I haven’t heard when it comes to pregnancy questions. So today, let’s put those worries about body hair during pregnancy to rest!
Three things to know about shaving during pregnancy:
Your body will react differently.
From skin sensitivity to how much you bleed when you nick yourself — blame it on the hormones and that clever placenta. You might need to switch up your shaving routine, or simply patch-test anything new (especially creams).
Depilatory creams & waxing can be unpredictable.
Always try a small patch test, particularly on your legs first. Some creams explicitly say "don’t use during pregnancy" and waxing can be more painful (and sometimes salons won’t even offer it to pregnant clients).
Labor and delivery nurses do not care about your body hair!
Seriously — as the person who’ll be there holding your legs during birth, I can promise we’re worried about you and baby, NOT your leg or pubic hair.
Plus:
If shaving just isn’t working for you anymore (it gets hard to reach!), there are tools and techniques that can help, but please don’t sweat it. Plenty of people have hairy legs at their delivery, and we do not bat an eye.
