Today’s post is all about a medication that sparks a LOT of conversations—and concerns—online: Cytotec (Misoprostol). If you or someone you know is considering labor induction, you’ve probably seen Cytotec mentioned, sometimes with controversy. Let’s clear the air and get the real, evidence-based lowdown from Hilary Erickson, The Pregnancy Nurse®, who’s been in labor and delivery for over 20 years.
Myths vs. Facts: What IS Cytotec?
Originally, Cytotec was created for GI issues, not for labor. But, as often happens in medicine, it turned out to be incredibly useful for another purpose—kickstarting labor.
It’s used worldwide for induction because it’s cheap, doesn’t need refrigeration, and can be given in different ways: orally, vaginally, or between your lip and gum (buccal).
It isn’t FDA-approved for labor induction, largely because it’s also connected with abortion procedures, and, well, government processes move slowly. But that doesn’t mean it’s unsafe when used appropriately.
Most hospitals don’t require a special consent form for Cytotec anymore, but check your local policies.
What to Expect If You’re Given Cytotec
Cytotec is usually given when your cervix is less than 3 cm dilated and needs to soften (“ripen”).
Hilary emphasizes that while Cytotec can sometimes get you into active labor without Pitocin, most of the time Pitocin will still be needed after you reach 3 cm.
It’s fast-acting for many—some studies even show that people given Cytotec deliver faster than those started straight on Pitocin.
Concerned about side effects? Once the pill is given, it can’t be easily “taken back”—unlike IV Pitocin, which can be stopped straight away. But your care team can still manage side effects with other medications if necessary.
The Bottom Line
Don’t let fear-mongering online sway your decisions. Cytotec is a vital tool in safe inductions around the world. As Hilary puts it, “I think Cytotec, when used correctly, can actually be really helpful, and I think you should consider it if you need to have an induction.”
