Feeling Anxious About Labor? Here Are 3 Things That Help You Feel in Control
If you’re anything like me, the thought of heading into labor can open up a floodgate of anxiety and what-ifs. As a pregnancy nurse (and an anxious mom myself!), I know how it feels to want to grasp a little control over a hugely unpredictable situation.
In my latest YouTube video, I’m chatting mom-to-mom about three things that can genuinely help you feel more prepared and empowered for your hospital birth experience.
Here’s a quick sneak peek of what we talk about:
Write Down Your Birth Preferences
Don't get hung up on semantics—call it a birth plan, hopes, dreams, or preferences. The point is to calmly consider what you hope for and what’s most important to you, even if not everything goes to plan. Thinking through simple choices, like room lighting or music, can help you feel more grounded.Get a Buddy
Birth isn’t something you should have to do alone. Bring someone you trust—your partner, mom, or best friend. If you don’t have someone, see if you can connect with a doula (sometimes nonprofits can help!). And if your partner is coming but feels lost, help them get prepared, too—so they’re more than just a cheerleader.Get Prepared (For Real)
Social media is NOT enough! There’s a ton of bad info out there (believe me—I see it daily). Look for a prenatal class that fits your time and actually involves your partner, and COMMIT to finishing it. Preparation makes a huge difference in how you feel walking into the delivery room.
I also share a bonus tip about control (spoiler: no one really has it!), and my top three must-haves for your hospital bag.
